The Latest Local Foreclosure News

Hundreds of families in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry are struggling to keep their homes.

It's a side effect of the nationwide mortgage meltdown, and though our area isn't feeling the pain as much as metro areas like Atlanta, it's still a very scary situation for many.

In Georgia there were nearly 10,000 foreclosure filings last month. In South Carolina there was more than 2,000.

Those numbers are actually down in South Carolina, but it's the opposite case in Georgia…and the nation. 

As of October, Chatham County had 151 homes in foreclosure and 66 in Beaufort County.

If you are facing foreclosure, we have some advice for you.

  1. Contact your lender as soon as possible.  The further behind you get on payments the harder it is to help you.
  2. Prioritize your spending. Look for places you can save money and make keeping your home your priority.
  3. Make sure you avoid foreclosure scams.
  4. Open all the mail you get from your lender.  It can be a stressful time but you do need to read all the information they’re getting to you.
